At first glance, the last Epoch Classes and skill system might seem simple. But do not let that fool you. Underneath it all hides a complex character-building system that will even give the most hardcore players out there a run for their money.
Last Epoch is an action-RPG that has you fighting waves of enemies as you travel through time to battle a dark force called The Void which threatens to destroy everything.
You can read about it more in our Last Epoch Review.
In this article, we’ll break down the Last Epoch classes and help you prepare for the challenges ahead.
Base Last Epoch Classes 2020
Last Epoch has five base classes. Each class has a unique set of subclasses known as “masteries” which allow you to specialize in certain aspects of your class depending on your preferences and playstyle. There are many skills to play with and you can spend hours just theory crafting and coming up with unique builds. You will be able to read about it more in our upcoming Last Epoch Builds article.
So, let us dive right in

Mage
The Mage is the game’s primary magic class. Mages utilize the powers of the elements (lightning, ice, and fire) to deliver devastating AOE attacks and cast buffs.
Mages starting items are:
- burning branch
- refuge armor
- traveler’s belt
These allow you to hold additional potions and do extra elemental damage, as well as to boost your defense.
Mages have three masteries to choose from:
- Sorcerer
- Spellblade
- Runemaster
Sorcerers prioritize long-range spells, while Spellblade specializes in close-ranged combat. Both are interesting and unique so choose according to your playstyle.
The Mage will also see a Runemaster mastery in the near future. According to the developers, this mastery will have you take advantage of runs to cast buffs and will also unlock powerful defensive abilities like raising walls or even golems.
Rogue
The rogue class is your classy stealthy bow-and-arrow type and a brand-new class as of this writing.
If you choose the Rogue, you can explore 11 different subtypes of daggers, cast courses, dual wield weapons like swords and daggers, and much more.

The Rogue’s masteries are the Bladedancer and the Marksman. The Bladedancer excels at melee combat while the Marksman specializes at attacking from range with powerful area of effect attacks.
Primalist
The Primalist is a warrior class that utilizes the power of nature to take out its foes. The Primalist is the game’s animal-focused class, with the ability to summon wolves, sabertooth tigers, snakes, and various elemental attacks.
Like the Mage, the Primalist’s starting items are the refuge armor and the traveler’s belt. However, instead of a wand, the Primalist starts with a one-handed axe, the Hatchet.
These classes’ masteries are the Shaman, the Druid, and the Beastmaster. With the Shaman specialty, your elemental attacks such as thunderstorms and avalanches become much more powerful. The Druid mastery enhances your shapeshifting abilities.
Then there is the Beastmaster, which invigorates the Primalist’s connection to animals and mastery allows him to summon powerful beasts to aid him in battle.
Acolyte
As an Acolyte, you take advantage of dangerous magics like necromancy to utilize poison or soul-sucking abilities to drain your enemies of life.
Acolytes also start out with the traveler’s belt and refuge armor, though they also get a scepter that increases melee and spell damage.

You can choose to master your necromancy or your soul-sucking abilities as the Necromancer or Lich, respectively. The former allows you to summon armies of undead to protect you and your party, while the latter will unlock devastating area-of-effect life-draining abilities and magic buffs.
The third mastery is the Warlock. Like the Runemaster It is also still in development. This class will focus on courses, de-buffs, illusions, and immensely powerful mind control abilities that will bring enemies to your side mid-battle.
Sentinel
Last Epoch’s fifth and final class, the Sentinel, is the game’s peak physical class. Wielding hammers, swords, and shields, the Sentinel tanks damage and smashes whoever dares to stand in his way.
Unlike other classes, the Sentinel gets four starting items:
- Refuge armor
- Traveler’s belt
- broad sword – a powerful one-handed weapon for fighting enemies
- knights shield
The Sentinel masteries are Paladin, Void Knight, and Forge Guard. Paladins are healers that can revive themselves after death. They are also equipped with various buffs and even some fire abilities.
Void Knights take advantage of the darkness to stun and steal the life force of their enemies.
The Forge Guard can enhance physical weapons and armor. This mastery also has molten lava abilities to incinerate anyone who is brave enough (or foolish) to attack it.
Last Epoch Best Class
Among all Last Epoch Classes, the Last Epoch Rogue is currently considered by many to be the best class in-game. This is largely because of its mix between ranged and melee combat. After all, the Rogue can damage enemies from distance with its bow, defend itself with daggers and hide in the shadows.
The Rogues stealth mechanics are also incredibly fun and rewarding. You can sneak up on enemies to surprise attack them for extra damage or, if you prioritized ranged abilities, wipe out massive groups of enemies from afar, which is also incredibly satisfying. Not a lot of ARPG have stealth mechanics so it is a breath of fresh air.
And finally, the Rogue’s ability to duel-wield can pull insane amounts of damage and burn through maps quickly. This type of gameplay is sure to find an audience among hardcore and newcomers alike.

In the future, the Rogues will be able to walk the path of a Falconer mastery. While we are not sure exactly what this mastery will include, we know Falconers will have the ability to summon a falcon to aid them. The falcon will deal damage, and maybe even bring you items and heals. The website’s description also hints towards being able to lay traps and more.
Another player-favorite class is the Last Epoch Necromancer. As we mentioned previously, this is one of the Acolyte Masteries. Necromancers are always a welcomed addition to almost any party thanks to their ability to raise hordes of undead to aid them.
Last Epoch Class Tips and Tricks
If you are a beginner at the game, here are some Last Epoch tips and tricks to master your class selection.
Before you pick a class, look at all its masteries and skill trees. Note which looks the most appealing to you and your playstyle and plan out your skill point allocation for the best experience. Keep in mind there are active and passive skills. A perfect combination of both can make you a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
Depending on your class, learn how to use your defensive abilities. Most classes can dodge to avoid incoming attacks, but some classes get additional defensive abilities. For example, Sentinels can use shields to block attacks. The majority of the game’s magical classes can cast defensive wards and summon soldiers to protect themselves.
Plan out your weapons and armor choices just as well as your skill points. For example, Different armors provide various levels of defense as well as other bonuses. Try figuring out early what bonuses will best benefit your build and prioritize those.
There is also the difference between one-handed and two-handed weapons. One-handed weapons attack faster and allow you to hold another item in your other hand, but don’t do as much damage as two-handed. Conversely, the damage offered by two-handed weapons is balanced out by your lack of defense. So, choose wisely.
